Apple has just released an updateto the 2nd generation Apple TV — version 4.4.2 (9A336a). We’re not sure if the update features anything besides bug fixes, but we’re downloading to see. Let us know what you’re getting in the comments below.

Apple’s last update to the Apple TV, version 4.4.1, was pulled at first but then reintroduced. The update brought bug fixes, and we suspect that 4.4.2 does the same.

Update: We’ve been hearing reports that this update is causing a reset of the Apple TV, but works with a second try. Be careful!

With 4.4 bringing such loveliness as support for AirPlay mirroring, Photo Stream and other added value, iOS 4.4.1 brought some bug fixes to the party, helping to make the Apple TV experience a little, well, better.

If the change log for iOS 4.4.2 is anything to go by, we’re looking at more of the same this time around.

  • Audio playback: Addresses an issue in which audio is not output when playing some video content.
  • Video playback: Addresses an issue in which video is not displayed when playing some content.
  • Audio output setting: Adds an audio output setting for switching to 16-bit audio for compatibility with some TVs and AV receivers.
  • Live FF/RW improvements: Improves the performance of fast-forwarding and rewinding live events.
  • Movie description: Addresses an issue in which the description information is not displayed for some movies.
  • YouTube video order: Addresses an issue in which YouTube subscription videos were not ordered by date.

We’ve also heard reports of some users finding it difficult to update to any version of the Apple TV’s software past the initial 4.4 release. If that sounds like you, head on over to this Apple support article, the gist of which is thus: reset your Apple TV to factory defaults, and then try to perform the update again.

You can kick the update off by selecting the Update Software option in your Apple TV’s settings, or alternatively you can download the IPSW here, and update manually using a micro-USB cable. For the sake of ease, we’d definitely recommend the automated route!

While we all love shiny new features in our updates, be they for Apple TV, iPhones or iPads, you can’t really argue against bug fixes. The fact that Apple has even taken the time to recognize bugs, let along fix them so quickly, is perhaps testament to just how seriously the company is taking the Apple TV these days.

A hobby? Really?

Apple has also released an update to the MacBook Pro. The update applies for the 15-inch version (2010) and fixes display freezing. The update is 70.97MB.
