Trying to figure out how to get the4S‘s virtual personal assistant to say your name properly? One of Siri’s abilities is to learn who you are and refer to you by your first name. However, many of us have names that Siri does not how to pronounce correctly. For example, my name is Leanna and Siri refers to me as “Leena”. To get Siri to pronounce your name correctly, all you need to do is change your nickname field to a phonetically spelled version of your first name.
Before we jump into the details, it’s important to mention that this will only work for your own name. Siri will recognize other people’s nick names if you say them, but will refer to them by their actual name. Unfortunately, filling out the phonetic and last name fields does not help Siri, either.
But what will work is changing your personal nickname, and here’s how.
- Open Contacts app
- Select your name
- Tap Edit
- Scroll to the bottom and tap “add field”
- Tap Nickname
- This will add the nickname field below your last name. This is where you want to type out a phonetic spelling of your first name.
- Tap Done
There you go! Now when Siri says your name, it will say it however you spelled it in your nickname field. The disadvantage to this method is that Siri will also spell out your Nickname instead of first name when writing out your name. So you must decide which is more annoying: hearing Siri say your name wrong, or reading your name spelled wrong? Untilupdates Siri to understand the phonetic first and last name fields, this is our only workaround.
